making Ink

For hundreds of years, people made their own ink at home. Lists, letters, even handwritten books (which we call manuscripts)—all of them were written with homemade ink! Pens with ink already in them were not common until the late 1800s. This video shows you how to make your own ink with a simple recipe.

This video was filmed at the Capitol Hill Day School, Washington, DC. Special thanks are due to the school’s students and faculty, including Jason Gray, head of school, and teachers Heidi Bachman, Molly Doyle, Beth Nalker, Laura Nakatani, and Adrienne Nelson.
