making a Quarto

A quarto is a kind of book that was popular in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Quartos allowed a printer to make four double-sided pages from one sheet of paper. Paper was expensive, and printers often wanted to make as many pages as they could with the least amount of paper. Learn to make your own quarto with this video.

This video was filmed at the Capitol Hill Day School, Washington, DC.  Special thanks are due to the school’s students and faculty, including Jason Gray, head of school, and teachers Heidi Bachman, Molly Doyle, Beth Nalker, Laura Nakatani, and Adrienne Nelson.
