what Came Before the King James Bible?

The King James Bible is not the first or oldest edition of the Bible in English. The pictures at left show some important Bibles that came before the King James Bible.

People started translating the entire Bible into English in the 1380s, although during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, many of the Bibles used in England and Europe were written in Latin. Students studied Latin in school, and people heard Latin at church. In fact, people from different countries could use Latin to communicate with each other, making Latin a very important language.

All of the Bibles here—except one—are written in Latin.
